Silver Lake Sleep Needs Study Committee

A district-wide ad hoc committee has formed to investigate the subject of adolescent sleep needs and the pros and cons of a possible district-wide delay of school start times by 45 minutes, making the secondary start times: SL Middle School - 8:05 a.m. and SL High School - 8:15 a.m. and the elementary schools - 9:15 a.m.

Recognizing the implications such a change would have on all students, teachers, parents and administrators in the Silver Lake District, we are committed to investigating all aspects of such a delay. No change would be enacted for the 2010-2011 school year.

Public hearings and community-wide will be part of this exploration. Watch this site and the local newspapers and school bulletins for further activity.

The Silver Lake Ad Hoc Sleep Study Committee is preparing a powerpoint presentation on the issue of adolescent sleep needs and the options the Silver Lake District may take with regard to this scientific data. This presentation will be given at faculty meetings, school committee meetings, PTA and PTO meetings in the early fall of 2009.

The committee is leaning toward suggesting a 45 minute delay for all schools - NOT a school start time switch. This would put SL middle and high school start time at 8:05/8:15 a.m. and the elementary schools at 9:00/9:15 a.m.

The suggested implementation date for this would be Sept. 2010.

A committee vote to recommend an option to the various school committees will be taken at the July 20th meeting at 7 p.m. in the Halifax Town Hall.
