Junior Year

Spring

  • Log onto Naviance to begin your college search. (See your counselor if you need log-in information)
  • Start looking through college catalogs, viewbooks and college web pages. A great resource for career and college information is the Internet. Stop by the guidance office for a brochure on Naviance, MassCIS, and more.
  • Talk to your parents about your college plans and finances. Be honest!
  • Begin visiting colleges in the area. Attend open house days and spring college fairs. Check Naviance for announcements.
  • Make a "long list" of 10 - 12 colleges including a couple of "long shots", some "sure bets", and some "strong possibilities".
  • Write or e-mail colleges to request admissions information and visit college websites.
  • Start the application process immediately for ROTC Scholarships and/or Service Academy Appointments.
  • Discuss "Early Decision" with your counselor and your parents.
  • Finish your junior year with the very best grades possible!
  • Sign up and take the May SAT Reasoning Test
  • Take the AP Exams if appropriate.

Summer

  • Continue to review college materials.
  • Visit more colleges, perhaps while on vacation.
  • Compare colleges, your expectations, your financial situation and reduce your list to 10 choices to further explore.
  • Devise a filing system for college materials.
Senior Year

September/October/November

  • If you're ready, sign up for the October SAT Reasoning Test or Subject Test if the colleges you are applying to require it. (October test not held at Silver Lake)
  • Sign up for the November SAT Reasoning Test
  • Sign up for the December SAT Subject Test if the colleges you are applying to require it.
  • Schedule an appointment with your guidance counselor. Bring all college materials with you.
  • Pick up the College Scholarship Service Financial Aid Profile registration form. You may submit this registration as soon as you want. The FAFSA, Free Application for Federal Student Aid, must be filed after January 1.
  • After meeting with your counselor, review your college materials and consult with your parents to reduce your second college list to a final 3 to 5 colleges where you will now apply.
  • Request application packets directly from the college. Check college web pages for on-line applications. Check to see if your college choice will accept THE COMMON APPLICATION.
  • Submit "Early Decision" applications; then complete the forms to request a transcript and your counselor recommendation.

November/December

  • November: SAT Reasoning Test if you signed up.
  • December: SAT Reasoning Test/Subject Test if you signed up.
  • Financial Aid Night
  • Watch for deadlines. Mail in applications. Request a transcript and a counselor recommendation at least two weeks before the deadline.
  • Listen to Morning Announcements for details and check Naviance weekly for announcements and e-mail messages from Guidance.
  • Sign up for the January SAT at Silver Lake if need be.

January

  • File the FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1.
  • Take the January - SAT Reasoning & Subject tests if need be.
  • Make sure you requested an official record of your SAT Reasoning and SAT Subject (if needed) scores be sent to any college not listed on your SAT Reasoning and SAT Subject report form.

February/March/April

  • Notify Guidance of your acceptances.
  • Check the materials received from the colleges and follow the directions carefully.
  • Apply for local scholarships.
  • Review your summary sheet from your CSS profile (if you have one) and make corrections if needed.
  • Make your final choice and notify all the colleges which accepted you of your decision.
  • Keep Working hard in school...grades still matter!
  • Sign up for the SAT Reasoning test if a Junior

May

  • SAT: Reasoning Test for Juniors
  • Take the AP Exams, if appropriate.
  • Make sure you return all necessary materials to your new alma mater.
  • Check the mail for an invite to Senior Awards Night.

June

  • Celebrate! It's Graduation!
  • Write "thank you" notes to scholarship donors.
  • Congratulations and good luck from the guidance department!
  • Come visit with us at Thanksgiving. Participate in our Alumni Day next December.
